iLogix Computer Solutions were asked to repair a broken HDMI port on an XBox SeriesX.
Broken HDMI ports are very common and iLogix Computer Solutions see these on all consoles, not just Microsoft XBox Series X. The repair is not simple. It requires the console to be completely dismantled.
Dismantling the console is of course is a superb opportunity to clean the interior. Like all computers gaming consoles have cooling fans that are designed to bring air into the chassis and flow across the components to keep them cool. Over time environmental contaminants like dust build up on the electrical components and begin to act as an insulator. See our noisy PlayStation 4 blog for more on how this happens.
This XBox Series X was no different. The picture below shows the heatsink with a thick layer of dust.
The HDMI port is soldered on the system board. To safely remove the damaged port the board needs to be heated up to melt the solder to allow the port to be safely lifted off without damaging the pads on the system board. If the pads are damaged the repair becomes more complex as we have to then recreate the damaged pads with copper wire. The XBox Series X is an expensive console and at the moment very hard to come by.
The picture below shows this XBox Series X, we can see the silver pads where the pins of the broken HDMI port used to be soldered.
We now put new solder on the pads and place our new HDMI port in position and solder it onto the system board with a soldering iron. Microsoldering requires the right tools, having the right resources for anything determines the success of the outcome. iLogix Computer Solutions used a Hakko FX-951 soldering iron with a micro tip to solder the pins of the HDMI port to the pads. We used a microscope to be able to see with accuracy and clarity. The pins on the HDMI port are microscopic and the photo below shows the finished result, however removing the port without damaging the board is absolutely crucial. Whenever iLogix Computer Solutions see damaged pads it is almost always a result of technical error removing the port. This is why all our blogs start with a disclaimer.
Once we re assembled the repaired and cleaned console we connect it up to a TV and test it.
One thing we always recommend after an HDMI port repair is to throw away and replace the HDMI cable that was last used. If the interior of the connector on the cable is damaged it can easily reintroduce the issue requiring the repair to be carried out again.
