iLogix Computer Solutions were asked by a customer for help with an XBox One that would not power on. When we tested the console the device powered on and immediately off. The first thing to do is test with a known good power brick. Start with the basics.
We dismantled the console and started by examining the system board under a microscope, look at what you can see before you look at what you can not see. Liquid damage and burned components will stand out as will any prior repair attempts, however this was not the case here.
The next thing we look at is power coming into the console. We can test components with a Multimeter. What we are looking for are shorts on the power supply circuit, we can test our Mosfets with our multimeter as shorted Mosfets are a common fault with this console. After our Mosfets tested fine we then checked our power rails, there are a number of rails that work together and have different voltages which we can check with our Multimeter...... no dice !!! so what now. It all looks tidy, we have our power rails and power supply circuit but our XBox One still powers off immediately.
The next thing we needed to do was to check the system board for short circuits using a thermal camera. Short circuits are very common on electronic devices. A short circuit occurs when an electronic component develops a fault and introduces an unexpected path to ground into the electrical circuit. The component gets very hot because it is grounding the circuit and there are a number of methods that can be used to locate these. iLogix Computer Solutions use a Flir Thermal Camera to locate shorts. In the video below we have applied voltage to the system board twice, look to the right side of the image and you will see a glow. When the glow stops it is because the console has powered off. Power supplies, including laptop power supplies, often shut down when a short is detected to prevent further damage. For this reason electrical engineers prefer to use a voltage injector to locate shorts.
Using our thermal camera we was was able to pinpoint the shorting component. We then desoldered and resoldered a new component from stock parts. Our XBox One now powers on.
Another fix !! another happy gamer !!
The XBox One is not the newest XBox Console from Microsoft however iLogix Computer Solutions still see quiet a few of these come in for repair.
