iLogix Computer Solutions was given a Dell Latitude 5410 laptop by a customer. The owner said that the USB-C port was not working. On inspection we actually found that the USB-C was no longer attached to the system board and was infact lose inside the case. The Dell Latitude 5410 has a USB-C Port which can be used for charging as well as connecting devices including a USB-C docking station. The USB-C Port has four legs that penetrate holes through the system board and are then soldered in place. We have seen a number of issues with Dell Laptops recently and USB-C port related problems. In this case the legs are too short to penetrate the systems board and there does not appear to be enough solder added to support the legs in the factory. When the user connects and disconnects a USB-C cable all the pressure is on the pins of the USB-C Port. We can see why it broke.

iLogix Computer Solutions carry stock of many parts, USB-C Ports included and we had a matching port in stock. The photo here shows the Dell port, the black port, and the stock, silver, ports.

The first thing we have dones is clean the pads. The pads are the part of the board where components interface. This is done with a soldering iron, soldering flux and some soldering wick. The following video shows us doing this on this Dell Latitude 5410.

After we have cleaned the pads we can tin them with new solder and then by applying hot air, around 480C, we attach a brand new USB-C port to our board.

In this case we applied additional solder to support the legs giving us a "Better than Factory" solder joint.

After we cleanup with some IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) we can re assemble our laptop and test it.

Job done!! Don't worry we cleaned the screen up with some antistatic foam, we hate dirty computers as well.

iLogix Computer Solutions repair broken USB-C Ports as well as all ports on all devices. Windows Laptops, Macs, Gaming Consoles, Mobile Phone and Tablets.
